Ninth graders research and analyze marketing strategies/methods in advertisements. They make their thinking visible by reviewing their data and determining the most and least effective methods. They also write down the product ad that prompted the strongest impulse to buy. This research will eventually lead to an argument essay. Excuse my horrible handwriting!

Honors English 9 participated in a Socratic Seminar/Harkness Discussion hybrid based on Aldous Huxley’s “Brave New World”. We made thinking visible by documenting the discussion thread AND by noting what kind of questions/responses were made. Tomorrow, students will perform a metacognitive write to explore areas of improvement and set goals for the next one.

You can learn a lot when “looking” at a class discussion. In the future I plan on implementing this method using the “fishbowl” set up rather than the whole class “seminar” set up. Small numbers seem to be key.
